How I Got An Administrative Job From Cashier to Corporate world Hi! My name is Ann, I am now a corporate recruiter for a Fortune 500 company with 6 recruiters that report to me. But it wasn’t always this way… Here’s what I did to succeed and you can do it too…
With my divorce, came several bills and only one income – mine! At the time I had no computer skills and hardly any clothes. I knew that I always wanted an office job and somehow I needed to figure out, how to get one. One day I went over to the thrift store and bought 2 jackets, 2 pairs of black pants, a skirt and a pair of heels. I needed to work. I went to several temporary agencies and applied for receptionist and administrative positions. One agency called me back and asked if I could be on a temp job the next morning at 8:00am. Since I really needed the job, I did what I had to do in order to be there the next morning. I arrived and being my first day, I wanted to make a great impression. I smiled all day and took phone calls. Here’s a key thing I did that had a tremendous impact. That night I took the phone extension list home with me so that I could get familiar with everyone’s name and extension. That temp assignment lasted 4 months and when it was over, they hired me! Sometimes going the “extra-mile” to learn the job best, pays off in the end. While at the front desk I had access to a computer and taught myself - through “trial and error” how to use Microsoft Office. I went to a community college and took a one day class for $95.00 in Excel - best money I ever invested! You see, computer skills make you worth more money. Over the years, I have developed great computer skills making me a valuable asset to my team. It seems that wherever I may work, somehow I find a way to utilize the experience that I have gained and am known for my skills. When I left my job, I was offered a position as a recruiter with the company that placed me. I then learned communication and negotiation skills which set the pace for my career which has afforded me the opportunity to help all kinds of people see their worth and understand how to exist in the corporate world. So if I can go from cashier to land an administrative job, anyone can do it. The key? Persistence positive attitude and going the extra-mile So are you ready to start looking for administrative jobs? Here's what you need - Best Wishes, Ann |
